Instagram cracking down on accounts that feature AI-generated influencers
As AI slop continues to dominate the web, Instagram is cracking down on accounts that leverage AI-generated influencers by threatening to restrict their reach.
In a blog post, Instagram details that its “AI creator” label for accounts is now going to say “AI-generated profile,” better reflecting that the account is not just using AI, but that viewers are interacting with an influencer that is entirely AI-generated.
Accounts that were using the “AI creator” label will have a chance to review the status and have it removed if it no longer fits their content.
The bigger change, though, is that Instagram will actively crack down on accounts that don’t use the label at all if they are using “AI-generated influencers.” This includes not showing content in recommendations such as the “For You” page.
For unlabeled profiles that feature an AI-generated person, creators can and should apply the label by editing their profile and toggling on AI-generated profile. The label will then begin to appear on their profile and alongside their content if their specific media doesn’t already have a label indicating that it was created or edited with AI. Creators who proactively add the AI-generated profile label will not see a change to their profile’s reach.
Adding the label or appealing the decision can reverse the impact, but this is a considerable change on Instagram’s part, especially as AI-generated content has become incredibly prevelant on both Instagram and Facebook, both Meta-operated platforms.
