Police probe after three-month-old girl dies in woods
A cordon remains in place at a wooded area near Strawberry Lane in Cheslyn Hay
Police say they are continuing inquiries after the unexplained death of a three-month-old girl in a woodland in Staffordshire.
Emergency services were called to land off Strawberry Lane, near Cheslyn Hay, at 08:45 BST on Saturday, to a report of a child in cardiac arrest.
An air ambulance was sent to the scene, but the child was pronounced dead by paramedics a short time later, Staffordshire Police said.
"While the investigation remains at an early stage, this is an isolated incident and we understand that the child's family was camping in the area," Det Insp Katie Gregory said. "The death is being treated as unexplained at this time."
A police cordon remained in place in the woodland on Sunday, and officers remained in the area as they carried out inquiries, as well as to provide reassurance.
A bunch of roses was also left nearby, in tribute to the infant.
There are two fishing pools in the area that are used by locals, and the area is also popular with dog walkers and runners.
The scene of the tragedy was described as "hidden away" from the main woodland in the Wyrley and Essington Branch Canal Local Nature Reserve.
A cordon surrounds the spot, which is close to the fishing lake, and two camping tents - one of which is white with a navy blue trim - have been pitched.
