Unprecedented hole opened up in Antarctic winter sea ice

Low sea ice coverage around Antarctica this year and others has signalled a large shift in southern sea-ice growth over the past decade, driven by a combination of natural variability and human-caused climate change. But rising average temperatures aren’t the only obstacle to such growth.
