Walmart’s $60 Google TV streamer might be the only good deal left in streaming
As prices skyrocket on virtually everything else, Walmart’s $60 Onn 4K Pro streamer with Google TV might be the only good deal left — if you can find it in stock.
Prices on streaming hardware have exploded in recent months. Just a few examples include:
It’s rough out there folks. AI is totally worth it, right?
Anyway, all of those price hikes have had me revisiting the Walmart Onn 4K Pro that launched earlier this year and that I’ve been using in one of the rooms in my house for the past few months. Put simply, it gets the job done very well, and is a tremendous deal compared to everything around it.
The most direct comparison to the Onn 4K Pro is the Google TV Streamer, and they are pretty close across the board. They have virtually identical software, though Google’s first-party release obviously gets updates and new features a bit quicker. Performance is also nearly identical, with the only big difference being 4GB of RAM in Google’s streamer vs 3GB in Walmart’s. Most of the time, it doesn’t matter.
Walmart’s streamer continues to be a good performer day-in and day-out, and there are little things I actually prefer over Google’s. Topping that list would be the remote, which is a bit more comfortable and backlit, the latter being invaluable in a dark room at night. I could do without the slightly obnoxious “Free TV” button, but I’m overall quite happy with the remote, and even more so with the find remote button on top of the actual streaming box.
The hardware itself is unassuming with a fabric top and a footprint similar to any other streaming box. That fabric top won’t be a problem for most but, crazy tip, don’t spill anything on it! It’s basically impossible to clean if it gets dirty.
As far as ports go, you’ve got HDMI, Ethernet, full-size USB-A, and the whole thing draws power from USB-C instead of a barrel plug like the last generation — dreams do come true!
All of that comes together for just $60. It’s nothing ground-breaking, sure, but this is just a good streamer in every meaningful way without costing an arm and a leg like virtually everything else does right now. The biggest headache is just finding the thing in stock. We’ve been tracking stock for months and, finally, Walmart seems to be more consistently selling Onn 4K Pro both in stores and online, but your results may still vary depending on when you go to buy and where you live.
If you can’t find the Pro, Walmart also has its Onn 4K Plus dongle that costs just $50 and, in most ways, matches up with the Pro. The main things you’re giving up are the Ethernet port, USB-A port, and a bit of performance.
