A guide to Nature Index tables
The 2026 Nature Spotlight: Neuroscience tables are based on the Nature Index database, covering research articles published between 2021 and 2025.
The data are drawn from a subset of 128 journals in the Nature Index that excludes journals in areas unrelated to neuroscience. In 125 of these, neuroscience articles were identified using a combination of search terms, including keywords and fields of interest, in Digital Science’s Dimensions database (Digital Science is part of Holtzbrinck, the majority shareholder of Nature’s publisher, Springer Nature). These extracted articles, plus all of the Nature Index articles in three other journals — the Journal of Neuroscience, Nature Neuroscience and Neuron — formed the data for this spotlight.
The tables show the leading institutions in neuroscience research, ranked by a metric called Share for articles published between 2021 and 2025.
