Google Pixel 11 adds ‘Extreme Charging Mode’ to unlock faster wired & wireless charging
While charging on the Pixel 11 series still isn’t super fast, Google has made some upgrades this year, including the addition of a new “Extreme Charging Mode” that unlocks a bit of extra wired charging speed.
Charging rates aren’t the most transparent aspect of Google’s Pixel phones. For the Pixel 11 series, Google details the “ultra-fast wired charging” as the amount you can get in “about 30 minutes” – 75% on Pro XL, 55% on 11 and 11 Pro, and 50% on Fold. It’s a tiny bit faster than last year, but still topping out around 30W and 45W depending on the device.
There is a significant upgrade to wireless charging, with the whole lineup now supporting Qi2 25W wireless charging speeds – only the Pixel 10 Pro XL supported 25W last year, with the rest at 15W.
What is new this year is an “Extreme Charging Mode.”
Google explains that this new mode will “focus your phone’s performance entirely on powering up” to give you an “ultra-fast boost when you need it most.”
When you need power and don’t have time to wait around, Pixel’s ultra-fast wired charging helps to get a massive battery boost in minutes. In about 30 minutes, you can reach up to 75% wired charge on Pro XL, 55% on Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro, and 50% on Pro Fold. And now, you can turn on Extreme Charging Mode to focus your phone’s performance entirely on powering up, and get an ultra-fast boost when you need it most.
While Google couldn’t provide direct numbers prior to today’s launch, the company explained to 9to5Google that “Extreme Charging Mode” both cuts down on background tasks and allows the phone to get hotter while charging in order to speed up charging. This doesn’t break the existing 30/45W caps, but just gets more of that wattage into the phone before slowing things down.
“Extreme Charging Mode” on Google Pixel can only be turned on if the device is under 50%, but continues to kick in until the device is fully charged. It works both with wired and wireless charging, we were told. You can enable it via Settings or a Quick Settings tile.
The entire Google Pixel 11 series is available for pre-order now, and “Extreme Charging Mode” is available on all four devices. There’s no word on whether or not this might come to older models, but I wouldn’t exactly hold my breath.
