The Internet Reacts To Trump’s Crass Destiny 2 Meme
The White House currently specializes in controversy-courting memes, designed to piss off as many as possible with deliberately half-assed cultural references invariably created using AI. Which is a sentence that would have been absolutely ridiculous to parse at any other point in America’s history. But the latest, a clumsy and crass reference to Destiny 2, has really rubbed people the wrong way, posted to time with the devastating news of widespread job losses at developer Bungie.
The White House X account, with almost five million followers, reads like the propaganda output of a banana republic. It wildly veers between reposting far-right news networks’ lies, screenshots of Trump’s incoherent Truth Social drivel, perpetuating wholly untruthful witch-hunts, and embarrassing AI-generated slop. It’s kind of a bad look. But last night’s Destiny 2 reference just felt like an extra level of dickery.
This idiotic image of a Destiny-like character screen, featuring a muscular Trump holding a U.S. flag, and “power” levels beyond that which are possible in the game, is obviously nowhere near as dangerous and vile as endangering a person’s life because they put their arm in the Reflecting Pool, nor the constant spreading of misinformation regarding elections (both from the last 24 hours), but it’s just a pathetically low move. For a government that claims to be incessantly fighting for American jobs to just openly mock the loss of so many within the games industry (for which it offers none of the support or intervention that would be immediately proffered to banks, oil companies, etc.), is a gut punch on the same day we learned that most of Destiny 2‘s team have lost their jobs. And people have been responding furiously.
The common mantra in response is, “What the fuck is going on?”
What the actual fuck is going on today https://t.co/JjXPbU2wo2
what the actual fuck is happening. is the whole world on super mega crack or something? https://t.co/4ka6MtiNp3

Bragging (aka lying) about unemployment numbers and then posting this when Bungie laid off 200+ people. Fucking morons https://t.co/EKu8Sjq9jo
Dude genuinely fuck off. Destiny is a story about protecting the people. About setting differences aside. About unity, inclusion, and it's queer as FUCK. So FUCK ALLLLLLLLL THE WAY OUT OF MY FANDOM, LARP HOUSE
