Nintendo Reminds Everyone About The Other N64 Classic It Just Remade With A Free Update
Star Fox for the Switch 2 just got a surprise update that adds new stages and features for battle mode, as well as some significant tweaks to other parts of the game. It’s nothing as drastic as a completely new level or mode, but it might be enough to remind everyone that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time isn’t the only Nintendo 64 classic that got remade for the Switch 2 in 2026.
Version 1.2.0 went live last night and includes the addition of Katina, Sector X, and Venom to battle mode, as well as support for 4-player split-screen in battle mode on a single Switch 2. Lobbies will no longer disband after the host leaves, and there’s now new items that appear during battles. For people just playing the regular campaign, there’s a big fix to how damaging a boss is signaled onscreen during battles. It’s now a lot more obvious when you’re hitting a spot that actually hurts them:
Despite Fox McCloud appearing in the billion-dollar-grossing Mario Galaxy Movie earlier this year, the Star Fox remake didn’t exactly sell like gangbusters. That could change heading into the holiday season, though it’s hard to see it getting a lot of love once Ocarina of Time is sitting right next to it on store shelves without a significant discount (it’s currently $50 for the digital version, which includes a story mode that runs less than two hours).
Current rumors point to a new Star Fox game also potentially being in development, in which case fans might have a more substantial adventure starring McCloud and the gang in the not-too-distant future. Until then, there’s always Star Fox Adventures for the GameCube, which came to Switch Online over the summer.
