Touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro launches this week, here’s how the lineup will look
This week, Apple will be reversing a decades-long decision to exclude touchscreens from its laptop lineup, and we’ll be getting our first ever touchscreen MacBook in just a number of days. This MacBook Pro will fetch quite a premium, though. Here’s what we know so far.
After the release of the touchscreen MacBook Pro, the MacBook Pro lineup will offer three tiers:
In terms of pricing, we can likely expect the upcoming M6 14-inch model to retain the same pricepoint as the existing M5 14-inch model: $1999. At that price, it offers 1TB of storage and 16GB of unified memory, though frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw the return of 512GB at the base tier.
Earlier this year, Apple re-introduced 256GB as the base storage tier on the Mac mini, despite the fact that there was a brief period where 256GB was fully discontinued.
Beyond that, the existing high-end MacBook Pro models will shift to the middle of the lineup. Nothing about these MacBook Pros will be changing, and their price will likely remain the same. Per Omdia, the existing miniLED displays for MacBook Pro will remain in production through 2028, so it’ll probably be a little while where these models exist in the lineup.
At the top of the lineup, the new OLED touch models will slide in. These MacBook Pros will reportedly be ‘significantly lighter,’ while offering Dynamic Island, OLED, touch displays, and potentially even support for cellular. It’ll be the first major overhaul for the MacBook Pro since 2021.
In terms of pricing, the new MacBook lineup will likely look something like this:
The redesign prices are just guesses, though Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the redesigned models will fetch a ‘significantly higher’ price. It’s possible that the new models will start even higher than what I predicted here.
These new MacBook Pros will certainly be the most exciting Macs in quite some time, though you certainly need to be prepared to pay for it. The older models remaining in the lineup is likely a sign of how pricey these new models will start at.
