HomeView could double as a HomeKit security camera, shows code
Apple code sleuther pdfu has discovered evidence that HomeView will be able to serve as a HomeKit security camera.
They found multiple options for the security camera feature, with Apple taking significant steps to protect the privacy of household members …
Settings discovered in HomeView software 27.2 show settings to use the built-in camera for both streaming and recording.
Either streaming or recording can be set to activate when you’re home, when you’re away, or when you’re asleep.
As we’d expect from Apple, there are very strong privacy protections for the feature. An indicator light appears on the display when the security camera feature is in use, along with a sound to indicate that streaming or recording has begun. Members of the home also receive a notification.
Additionally, if any home members are in the home, then the security camera feature cannot be remotely activated, only from HomeView itself. This seems likely intended to prevent domestic abusers from spying on their partner.
This seems a worthwhile addition to the functionality, and could potentially influence the perceived value of HomeView for anyone on the fence about buying one. The privacy protections are first rate.
