The Pirate Shop Token Lottery Is Tearing Fortnite Apart
With GTA VI on the horizon, it makes sense that forever games are looking for ways to keep their existing playerbase engaged. Fortnite has taken the novel approach that, for the next month, it’s offering an incredibly rare token that makes most things in the item shop free. Moreover, finders of the token will get two cracks at reaching their hand into the item shop register, one this year and another in 2027.
It’s a brilliant, if insidious and damn-near predatory, way of generating community engagement that fits well with the current season’s One Piece theme, which is all about a bunch of misfits searching for the treasure that will end all treasure. The token has players up to all kinds of shenanigans, including the TOS-breaking kind, to acquire it. But the dang thing is so rare and so valuable that it’s making people who haven’t gotten it so mad that the word “boycott” is starting to pop up.
All Fortnite players deserve equal treatment. Players who barely play get the Pirate Shop Access Token on day one, while longtime players with 3000+ chests get NOTHING
I'm calling on Fortnite players if we don't get this token, let's BOYCOTT FORTNITE FOREVER
Players are reportedly opening thousands of chests and grinding for 30+ hours in the hopes of securing the once-in-a-lifetime drop. There are no official stats on its rarity which some players are saying is part of the problem as they demand that Epic Games disclose the item’s drop-rate statistics the same way gacha games are required in some regions to disclose their probabilities. The problem with that analogy, though, is that in a gacha game, you’re paying money for the chance at the super-rare item. Fortnite is free. But to these players, that distinction doesn’t matter and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has (kinda) been alerted.
Hello @FTC, Epic Games added a new "Pirate Token" which doesn't have any public odds of getting it, which creates anti-consumer field/FOMO. The game is majorly played by children, they can do anything if they wouldn't get it, so take action against Epic Games please
I do have some concern about the fact that this is encouraging kids to gamble with their time for a shot at a prize that’s arguably worth thousands of real-world dollars (though you can’t officially sell or profit from anything you acquire in the Fortnite item shop, so in another sense it has no monetary value at all). FOMO is a powerful drug, and the hostility around the Pirate Shop Token and by extension Fortnite is only growing as more players post clips of their lucky gets. Some are suggesting that this event will even have the opposite effect the folks who cooked it up likely intended by spectacularly burning folks out such that they turn to GTA VI anyway.
Players have about a month until the event is over, so however this shakes out, the pirate shop token frenzy won’t last forever.
