Fantastical’s long-awaited Android debut begins today on Googlebook
Fantastical has long been hailed as one of the greatest calendar apps available today, but if you’re an Android user, there’s a good chance you’ve never used it. Despite a move from Apple exclusivity to cross-platform availability on Windows, Android has long eluded the attention of development team Flexibits. Today, that’s finally changing, as Fantastical is headed to Google’s mobile OS platform — but not precisely in the way you might expect.
Beginning today, Fantastical is now available for Google’s new laptop initiative, Googlebook. Existing Fantastical users who rely on the app on different platforms (like iOS or Windows) can access Fantastical on Googlebook at no additional charge, while new users coming to Fantastical for the very first time can likewise also use the application on any of their other supported devices.
While the underlying OS on Googlebook is Android, Flexibits’ co-founder and CEO Michael Simmons stressed that the application isn’t quite ready yet to debut on phones, tablets, or foldables. Those versions are on the way — bucking what Simmons himself said back in 2024 when he declared the app would never find its way to the Play Store — but they won’t be ready for launch until sometime in 2027. Likewise, today’s announcement does not include bringing the company’s contact management app, Cardhop, to Android; Simmons tells me they have “no announcement” about that app at this time.
Fantastical began life on Mac back in 2011, offering calendar creation tools via a straightforward ordinary language-based interface that isn’t all too dissimilar to today’s LLMs. Though Flexibits unveiled a Windows variant in late 2024, today’s move marks the first step towards compatibility with Google’s mobile OS, and you can thank Googlebooks for building that bridge. Simmons told me development began after Google showed the Fantastical team a demo of its new laptop platform, and he found himself impressed enough to take a chance on finally expanding the app to Android.
While most users will have to wait until next year to get their hands on Fantastical, all you early Googlebook adopters out there have the chance to begin using a brand-new calendar app starting today. Individual pricing starts at $57 per year, with family plans starting at $90 annually. A free, less powerful tier is also available.
