Man desperate to find teen he saved 30 years ago
Lee Heyes said he would love to know how the man he saved is getting on
A man who risked his own life to rescue a stranger from drowning 30 years ago is trying to track him down.
Lee Heyes jumped into a quarry when he was 15 after he realised the older teen had got into difficulty.
The now 45-year-old, from Chorley, who has written a song about the ordeal, said instinct took over when the stranger, who he thinks was about 18 or 19, jumped in the water at Eccleston Delph and disappeared under the surface after getting tangled in reeds.
"It has really bothered me ever since," he said. "I would love to know how he is getting on."
Lee Heyes said writing a song about the ordeal has helped him
Lee, who is a plasterer and singer songwriter, performing as "soundstruggles", recalls there being all sorts in the water - even cars at the bottom - when the incident happened in the mid 90s.
He said it took him three attempts, diving deep under the surface, to find the teenager.
After managing to untangle him, Lee said it was a struggle to get him back to the surface as he was "much bigger than me".
Lee got his friends to enter the water to help keep the teenager's head above the surface while he swam to get help from a dad who was in a dinghy with his son.
