MagSafe Monday: Upgrading to the iPhone Duo? This MagSafe battery was built specifically for it
With the iPhone Duo bringing an entirely different shape to the iPhone lineup, you’ll need accessories built for it as well. BMX built the SolidSafe Duo specifically around the iPhone Duo. It’s designed to fit perfectly on the back without bleeding over and includes a stand.
MagSafe Monday: Every Monday, Bradley Chambers looks at the latest and greatest in the MagSafe and wireless charging industry to help you get the most out of your Apple devices that support wireless charging.
The reason the SolidSafe Duo fits the iPhone Duo’s proportions is the battery cell itself. In this MagSafe battery, BMX used a custom-made 5,000mAh semi-solid-state cell rather than a standard lithium-ion cell, which gave them the flexibility to build a compact form factor built for the iPhone Duo’s specific dimensions. A standard battery cell wouldn’t have allowed that without the battery overhanging the edges or sacrificing too much on the capacity.
The semi-solid-state battery contains significantly less liquid electrolyte than conventional lithium-ion batteries. With less liquid, there is less flammable material inside the cell, which reduces the fire risk associated with heat, physical damage, or internal short circuits. We’ve all seen enough battery recalls to understand why this is important.
The integrated rotating ring stand is designed around how people will use the iPhone Duo. Portrait mode is for reading and iMessage, and landscape for video, partially folded for hands-free calls. The stand rotates 360 degrees and stays attached as the phone’s position changes, so you don’t have to remove the battery pack every time you shift how you’re holding the iPhone Duo.
The SolidSafe Duo battery charges your iPhone Duo at up to 15 watts per MagSafe or up to 20 watts through the attached USB-C lanyard cable. The cable stays with the power bank, which means no separate charging cable to pack or lose track of. It also handles input of up to 15 watts via that same cable to recharge it.
A full-color LCD on the battery displays remaining battery capacity and live charging wattage simultaneously, so you can see both how much power you have left and how fast it’s actually charging.
The SolidSafe Duo is priced at a premium over generic/budget MagSafe battery packs, but with the iPhone Duo, you’ll want to have accessories designed specifically for it to maximize its value, so it’s worth a look. It’s likely that less expensive batteries will be launched in the coming months, but if you want one at launch, this looks like a solid option.
You can pick up the new SolidSafe Duo from Amazon or directly from BMX.
