Former army translator jailed for raping woman in private hire car

A former translator for the British Army who raped a woman after becoming a private hire driver in Scotland has been jailed for seven years.
Abdul Nabizada attacked the 19-year-old after failing to take her home from a night out in Edinburgh in 2021.
The 36-year-old, who previously worked as an interpreter for the British, Danish and American militaries in Afghanistan, denied the charges and claimed to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from an explosive device detonating near him.
Judge John Morris KC told Nabizada he had committed an "appalling betrayal of trust" during sentencing after he was found unanimously guilty at a High Court trial last month.
Nabizada, a father of four who lived in the Pilton area of Edinburgh, had applied for British citizenship after coming to the UK in 2016.
He had been a tailor in Afghanistan, but also worked with military personnel, translating his native Farsi alongside Dari, Pashto, Urdu and Arabic.
The court heard how the woman was intoxicated when she got into Nabizada's vehicle on Morrison Street following a night out with friends on 13 November, 2021.
She told the court she expected Nabizada to take her home, however he made her feel uncomfortable on the journey and persistently asked her to have sexual intercourse with him.
The woman said she repeatedly refused and told Nabizada she had a boyfriend.
